*Please note that due to an administrative error, NISHMA’s 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status was -- hopefully, temporarily (see below) -- revoked effective May 15, 2011 for failure to timely file an annual notice with the IRS.  As a result of the revocation, we are unable to confirm the tax-deductibility of any donations made to NISHMA as of May 15, 2011.  
Because many small organizations like NISHMA were unaware of the IRS’s new annual filing requirement that became effective in 2007, the IRS has developed a streamlined process for such organizations to have their tax-exempt status reinstated retroactive to the date the organization’s tax-exempt status was revoked.  NISHMA is currently in the process of submitting its request for retroactive reinstatement to the IRS.  NISHMA continues to provide the same programs and services as it has since the organization was established in 1989.  If and when the IRS grants our application for reinstatement, NISHMA’s tax-exempt status will be reinstated retroactive to the date it was automatically revoked, which means that all donations that were made since May 15, 2011 will be tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.  We will send all donors who have made donations a notice when NISHMA’s 501(c)(3) status has been reinstated.  We apologize for the inconvenience and thank you for your continued support.  If you have any questions regarding this matter, please do not hesitate to contact Wayne Lacks at wlacks@nishma.org or Rabbi Benjamin Hecht at rbh@nishma.org..
